Rural Resort Region's Focus for 2009: SENIORS IN OUR MOUNTAIN COMMUNITIES - Challenges & Opportunities

Focus for 2010:  Seniors in Our Mountain Communities:  Challenges and Opportunities

The fastest growing segment of the population of the United States will be seniors - those over the age of sixty-five. The US Census Bureau stated that "Beginning in 2011, the population 65 and older will grow faster than the total population in every single state."  There are currently an estimated 523,000 seniors currently living in Colorado, however that number is expected to jump to 745,000 by 2015, and to 1,044,000 by 2025.

The jump in senior population in Colorado can be attributed to the fact that Baby Boomers, those born between 1946 and 1964 are getting older. There are an estimated 76,000,000 American Baby Boomers. The first "Boomers" will reach age sixty-five in 2011. Also, Colorado is one of the fastest growing states in the nation and attracting its share of retiring seniors from other parts of the country.  The mountain communities of Colorado, especially the amenity rich rural resort communities, have become meccas for retiring "Boomers".
